Cassowary Coast University Centre Celebrates Milestone First Year

The Cassowary Coast University Centre (CCUC) has exceeded expectations in its inaugural year, welcoming more than 100 students and demonstrating strong regional demand for accessible higher education.

The CCUC, a collaborative initiative between Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) and Cassowary Coast Regional Council, marked its first anniversary with students, staff, and council representatives gathering to celebrate the milestone achievement.

Since opening, the Centre has attracted a diverse student community, with almost half being the first in their families to pursue higher education. Additionally, 45 students are parents balancing study, work, and family responsibilities while remaining in their local communities.

Students are enrolled across high-priority workforce areas including health, education, and human services, directly addressing critical skills gaps in the region.

VPG Chief Executive Officer Maryanne Tranter said the Centre’s growth had surpassed initial projections while fostering a strong sense of community among students.

“We’ve seen extraordinary growth that has exceeded our enrolment expectations. What makes this even more exciting is the diversity – first-generation university students, working parents, career changers – the Centre is serving the whole community’s educational needs,” Ms Tranter said. “With over 100 students now using the Centre, we’re growing future professionals right here – homegrown talent who will strengthen and sustain the regional workforce for years to come.”

Cassowary Coast Mayor Teresa Millwood praised the partnership’s community impact and its role in keeping local talent close to home.

“The CCUC is exactly what our region needs – pathways to higher education that don’t require locals to leave,” Mayor Millwood said. “We’re proud of what this partnership with VPG has delivered for our community. Seeing parents able to study while still tucking their kids into bed each night, and young adults contributing to local businesses while they learn – that’s keeping our region strong.”

The Centre has also welcomed Justin Brennan as its new Centre Coordinator, who will lead the next phase of growth and development. Mr Brennan brings extensive education sector experience, most recently serving in school leadership.

“The CCUC has already proven the demand is here,” Mr Brennan said. “For me, stepping into this role feels like the start of an important next chapter. I’ve seen the barriers regional students face firsthand, and I’m determined to help change that narrative. I’m confident about where we can take the Centre – strengthening connections with universities, local industry, and the community. In doing so, we will work to connect students with local businesses early and ensure our graduates are meeting the specific workforce needs of the Cassowary Coast region.”

In his role, Mr Brennan will manage daily operations, champion local access to higher education, and provide student wellbeing and academic support.

Ms Tranter said Mr Brennan’s appointment reflects VPG’s commitment to the Centre’s continued growth.

“We’re delighted to welcome Justin to lead the CCUC into its next phase,” Ms Tranter said. “His understanding of regional education challenges and his passion for student success make him the perfect fit to build on what we’ve achieved in year one.”

The CCUC is open to all regional post-secondary students studying university or vocational courses at any Australian institution at no cost. The Centre provides a campus-like environment with computer facilities, high-speed internet, and comprehensive academic and wellbeing support services.

Supported by the Australian Government through the Regional University Study Hubs Program, the CCUC is one of 56 Regional University Study Hubs across Australia working to bridge the education gap for regional students.

The success builds on VPG’s proven model, following the Tablelands University Centre opened in 2023, demonstrating the organisation’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities across regional Queensland.
